Overview
Stoughton, Massachusetts is a town located 17 miles from Boston and was founded in 1726. Since then, its residents have come mostly from Irish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, English, and German culture. Its population in 2010 was 26,962 people, and it is currently 78.4% white, 10.7% black, 3.6% Asian, 3.2% Hispanic, 2.3% two or more races, and 1.7% other races. While there are many cultural groups present in Stoughton, this website will only focus on the presence of English influence, Irish influence, and Portuguese influence. Currently, there are many Portuguese and Irish clubs and societies present around town. There are even Portuguese restaurants and Irish pubs that have live music sung in different languages. There are annual cultural celebrations such as Portuguese festivals and Irish heritage celebrations that all are encouraged to go and experience to learn about different cultures. The presence of these different cultures can also be recognized by the range of types of churches, temples, and synagogues around Stoughton.
