English Influence
The English culture present in Stoughton dates back to the discovery of the Americas, where the Puritans came and settled, spreading their culture and religion in Massachusetts. The English practiced social dances such as line dances and their unique style of Baroque dancing. Along with dancing, the English brought their old ballads and hymns, which eventually grew so popular that there became a musical society in Stoughton. Stoughton has the first musical society ever organized in the United States, dating back to 1762.
Below is a performance of a song published by the Stoughton Musical Society in 1878 in an anthology called "The Stoughton Musical Society Centennial Collection of Sacred Music." That, and more information on the piece is included in the video's description box.
