Most of Stoughton's Irish immigrants came in the 1850s around the time that the Irish were facing the Great Irish Famine, sometimes referred to as the Potato Famine. They flocked to Boston ports, and traveled to Stoughton for the industry starting there. The Irish brought over their Irish step dancing and jigs to Massachusetts, and there are dancing schools nearby that teach how to step dance. They also brought over different instruments unique to their Irish styles. The Irish Cultural Center in Canton, MA, which is very close to the Stoughton line, is very active planning Irish events and has something every month that includes Irish music, dance, and meals. Lots of Stoughton residents belong to the Irish club and lots of others show up just for entertainment. There are Irish restaurants and clubs all around Stoughton which hold cultural events and festivities, along with open mics and live performances to display and share culture.
Below is a clip from a performance at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, MA, just right outside of Stoughton. This Center invites people from all backgrounds to explore the culture of the Irish people with events including musical performances, crafts and games, and services with speeches and feasts.
